Jameson Hill ’10, Seton’s All-American swimmer, has made many headlines for his many impressive accomplishments! Our Seton wants to steer friends and alumni to two significant posts, so you can catch a glimpse of the swimmer who walks Seton’s halls.
Congratulations Jameson and good luck in your future endeavors at the University of Georgia!!
Seton’s varsity boys basketball team also scored big on Friday night against Highland to clinch the regular season title. Watch the exciting buzzer- beating shot to win the game. (Tim Vander Woude inbounds to Peter Mooney who quickly passes it to Patrick Stevens under the bucket to score at the buzzer. Then pandemonium. Seton 44. Highland 42. Game over.)
The boys have a bye in the first round of the tournament and play the winner of the FCS/RMA game on FRIDAY at Highland at 5:00. OurSeton will post details.
The Seton girls claimed States for the third year in a row as the boys clinched their title for two straight years! A complete breakdown of the meet can be found at www.setonswimming.org

Our Seton wants to congratulate Peter LaVigne ‘06 for a PERFECT score on the GRE* this year! Particularly impressive is the Verbal score as only 2% of college graduates taking the test earn a score as high as 720 (out of 800). Peter credits Mrs. Carroll’s summer school writing class as one of the keys to his success. Peter also received a perfect score on the SAT when he graduated from Seton in ‘06.
He is graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech and plans to earn a Masters degree.
(*FYI –The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a test required by most graduate schools. It is like the SAT for college graduates in that it has Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical Writing sections and is a factor used to determine an applicant’s ability to do graduate level work. )
REMEMBER MAN
Peter LaVigne got a perfect score on the GRE.
Jameson Hill broke a record held by an Olympic Medalist.
Mr. Westhoff had 122 “reads” out of a global population of about 7 billion, meaning that one out of every 60 million people, or so, that you meet today will have read his last posting.
Remember, man, thou art dust, and to dust thou shall return.
The sobering words of Ash Wednesday, the ashen cross on the forehead, the call to mortification and penance of Lent are in stark contrast to what we might rather think about or fashion ourselves to be.
It is profound that the Church uses the burnt branches from Palm Sunday to remind us. On Sunday hosannas rang out from young and old on the road into Jerusalem; by Friday hammer blows on nails that punctured His hands rang out from the hill of Calvary. On Sunday shouts for Jesus to be King came from the crowds lining the roadside; by Friday shouts of derision that He had saved others, let Him save Himself came from passersby and onlookers. On Sunday cloaks were laid in Our Lord’s path to ride over; by Friday lots were cast for His tunic.
Sicut transit gloria mundi.
The glory of Palm Sunday is reduced to ashes, and placed on the foreheads of Pope and cleric; king and peasant; scholar and illiterate; athlete and atrophic; world renowned and little known. And all hear, “Remember man….” A generic phrase that goes to the heart of each of us because we know that within our hearts there is a pride, a greed, a lust, a deadly stain of some sort that we have fashioned as we think ourselves greater than dust. Our envies, angers, gluttonies and slothful habits have coursed their way through our veins with the power to make our hearts dry as dust.
But we must also remember that it is a cross of ashes that is placed on our brow. The Word became flesh – became a man like us in all things but sin. So we can say that the Word became dust, taking on the form of a slave. He has shown us what this dust that we are is capable of, if we but renounce ourselves, take up our cross and follow Him.
Our prayers behind closed doors that only the Father hears; the fasting done with our faces washed; our alms that we give and never think twice about, all of these are greater than headline acts. We are reminded that within our dusty selves there is a greatness that will be called forth from our tombs on the Last Day.
He Who would have been made King on Palm Sunday for having raised Lazarus from the dead, holds each of us in His pierced palm on Good Friday where Pilate’s placard proclaims Him King.
Ash Wednesday reminds us of who we are and who we can be, and imprints on our foreheads and in our hearts how to reach greatness.
Jezu, ufam Tobie.
The big sports weekend (Feb. 5/6) for the varsity boys basketball team and for the swim team got cancelled due to the snow. 🙁 So REMARK your calendars for FEBRUARY 19th and 20th.
On Friday, the 19th, the Varsity Boys travel to HIGHLAND in Warrenton to determine who holds first place in the DAC. Due to snow cancellation, our home game against Highland was cancelled. So the deciding game will be played on Highland’s court. Plan to make this 7 pm game! (The girls also play at 5:30 pm and the JVB play at 4:00).
The swim team also has big meets upcoming. The DAC CHAMPIONSHIPS are at Fredericksburg Academy this Saturday… and then…. drumroll…. Seton hosts the STATE Championships at the Freedom Center on the 20th. Check out the swim team website for more information: www.setonswimming.org
Come on out Seton friends and Alumni and support the teams!
The DC snow has foiled many basketball games and swim meets. Stay tuned for the post-snow updated sports schedule. However, here’s some links for sports fans:
The Ann Arbor Dominican Sisters will be featured on Oprah today, Tuesday, February 9th, at 4 pm. Seton Alumnae Anne Quinn (‘91) is a member of their congregation. Oddly enough, they will be featured on the Oprah show with…. a western geisha. Connection? Hmm… can’t see one. So we announce this news with a caveat: viewers beware what Oprah might connect between the two.
Catholic Blogger, the Anchoress, has a preview commentary about the show and the problems with talk shows trying to understand Catholic religious vows on First Things.
Those who get a chance to view, please leave comments here about the show, so those who don’t get to watch can hear about it.
